Capability statement for construction companies: what to include

A capability statement is the short document that tells a council or head contractor who you are, what you can deliver and why they can trust you with the job. For a construction, concrete or civil business, it's usually the first thing an evaluator reads, and often the first reason they stop.

What a construction capability statement is for

Buyers use it to shortlist. They want to see quickly that you do the type of work they're buying, at the size they need, safely and with the people and plant to deliver. It is not a brochure. Every line should be evidence.

What to include

  • Business details: legal name, ABN, years trading, location and service area.
  • What you deliver: the specific scopes you self-perform, such as footpaths, kerb and channel, crossovers, slabs, bulk earthworks, drainage or trenching.
  • Capacity: crew size, supervisors, tickets and how many jobs you can run at once.
  • Plant and equipment: key machines, sizes and whether owned or hired.
  • Project experience: three to six relevant jobs with client type, value, dates, scope and a photo.
  • Safety and quality: your WHS system, SWMS, incident record and any quality or environmental processes.
  • Insurance and licences: what you hold and the cover levels.
  • Referees: named contacts who have agreed to take a call.
  • Contact: one person, direct mobile and email.

A simple structure that works

Keep it to two to four pages. Page one: who you are and what you deliver, with your strongest numbers. Page two: projects with photos and values. Page three: people, plant, safety and insurance. Page four (optional): referees and contact. Use the buyer's words: if the tender says “kerb and channel renewal”, so should you.

Mistakes that cost concreters and civil contractors

  • Generic claims like “quality workmanship” with no proof behind them
  • Domestic photos only, with no values or clients
  • Out-of-date insurance details or expired tickets
  • No plant list, or a plant list that doesn't match the work you're bidding for
  • One version for every buyer, when each tender scores different things

Can I use a capability statement template?

A template helps with layout, but evaluators can spot filler. What wins is your real evidence presented clearly. Procura builds capability statements from your actual jobs, crew, plant and records, then tailors them for each tender as part of our tender management service.
